Dear SC Users,

We would like to extend our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by the recent hard drive failure and subsequent system downtime.

We understand the frustration and disruption this may have caused to your work. However, we want to reassure you that all data remains intact despite the outage and all systems are back online. During the downtime, we took the opportunity to perform essential system maintenance (previously planned for the beginning of May), including:

• Updating all operating systems
• Transitioning to a new DNS server
• Updating Lustre (work file system)
• Updating Slurm (changes to RAM per CPU allocation)

We also take measures to prevent this error behaviour from recurring. Additionally, we have implemented quotas to mitigate such outages in the future and ensure equitable access to our systems for all users. Quotas have been set to 30GB for /home and 1TB for /work. Users exceeding these quotas on /home will be required to delete data accordingly before being able to write new data. Users who are currently exceeding their quota on /work will be contacted directly and individually by us. Furthermore, we have introduced Workspaces on /work. Existing directories will be available for data copying until November 30th, after which they will be deleted. Workspaces are temporary directories with a maximum runtime of 30 days, extendable up to 6 times (totaling 6 months).
